You hardly have time to open your mouth when they're already set to argue and, it seems, under no circumstances will they ever consent to that which is obviously contrary to their way of thinking, or consent to call that sensible which is stupid, and, in particular, never consent to dance to another's tune; and yet it will always wind up by a certain soft spot in their make-up coming to the fore, by their consenting to precisely that which they had been rejecting; that which is stupid they will call sensible, and will thereafter set off to dancing to another's tune in a way that could not be bettered - in short, they'll start off smoothly and end up uncouthly.
